Emissions control

Caja Madrid has continued to combine its anti climate change agenda with the conservation of the natural heritage, by trading off its CO2 emissions through reforestation projects in different regions of Spain. The planting of 80,199 trees of varied species in 2007, as part of the Obra Social-led “Two Million Trees” project, has permitted the fixing of 801.99 tonnes of CO2.

Sulphur dioxide (SO2) emissions, a direct culprit of acid rain, were cut by 7.7% as far as 0.033 kg/employee, while emissions of nitrogen oxide (NOX), carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrous oxide (N2O) were successfully stabilised. These gases are associated with phenomena of severe environmental impact such as photochemical smog and climate change.

Also, work progressed on reducing and eliminating HCFC refrigerant gas emissions (which deplete the ozone layer), through the timetabled withdrawal of the corresponding climate control units. A total of 108 such units were replaced in 2007 at an estimated cost of €1,014,828.
