Caja Madrid works to halt the loss of biodiversity by protecting species under threat or via the restoration of degraded spaces.

It is currently engaged in the following biodiversity projects:

  • “Two Million Trees”

A multi-year project to restore areas of environmental importance in the hill lands of Spanish regions. Over 1,950 hectares have been reforested since the project began in 2002, with over 1,000,000 million trees planted in a total of 13 provinces.
  • Raptor refuge in Montejo de la Vega

Actions under this scheme seek to improve conservation conditions in the designated refuge zone, with an extension of 2,100 hectares.
  • "Taking Flight": Spanish imperial eagle conservation programme

Focusing on management of the species' habitat through collaboration agreements with landowners; conservation actions; and education and awareness activities regarding the bird and its imperilled state.
  • Conservation of endangered species in the Mediterranean hill land areas forming part of Nature Network 2000

To improve the conservation status of four endangered species of Iberian fauna: the Iberian lynx, cinereous vulture, Spanish imperial eagle and black stork.
  • Photographic monitoring of the Cantabrian brown bear population

The aim is to create a digital photographic archive of more than 8,000 photographs taken in the last few years, which will form the nucleus of an awareness campaign around the species' conservation.
