European programmes for young people

The idea

Obra Social Caja Madrid’s European programmes are intended to help forge a European identity, and to enrich young people’s lives with values and experiences while improving their understanding of the European Union. As well as encouraging the exchange of ideas and knowledge, they offer work experience in a European setting. Two programmes stand out:

Eurobecas Caja Madrid offers occupational training students or diploma holders work experience placements in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Students get the chance to fill out their CVs, and to gain a high-quality professional and personal experience with a European dimension that will facilitate their subsequent labour-market insertion. Those completing placements receive a certificate from the University of Cambridge accrediting their progress in the language and the host company.

The Mock European Parliament helps build schoolchildren’s awareness of the European project, and of the tradition of constructive Parliamentary debate. Following the protocols of the European Parliament, the students develop skills and attitudes that can make them better rounded individuals, such as team work, public speaking, respect for the ideas of others and negotiating solutions.

Results

  • 200 grants per year for occupational training students or diploma holders.
  • A total of 14,496 mid-school pupils participated in the Mock European Parliament programme in 2007.
