Postgraduate scholarships abroad

The idea

Manteniendo el contacto, estrechando la relación, fomentando el desarrollo

The Postgraduate Scholarships Abroad scheme is designed for Spanish degree-holders wishing to extend their studies. Funding is available for master’s degrees, doctorate courses or research projects at the university or centre of the awardee’s choice in the United States, Canada and Europe (except Spain). Fundación Caja Madrid will pay for a one- or two-year stay depending on the course or project.

Areas covered are Social, Legal, Health and Technical Sciences, Basic Sciences and Music. Applicants are assessed by reference to their academic record, professional experience and language skills and the quality of the proposed research or study project.

The Foundation’s postgraduate scholarships cover the following items: matriculation fees, living expenses (from 1,200 to 1,500 euros a month depending on the country of destination), a single payment of 1,000 euros for settling-in expenses, foreign health insurance, accident insurance and the round-trip air fare.

Since 2005, students have been handed their scholarship credentials at a ceremony presided by Their Royal Highnesses the Prince and Princess of Asturias.

Results

A total of 125 new scholarships were offered for the academic year starting in 2007 (25 more than in 2006), with a further 50 or more going to students completing a second year.

The Postgraduate Scholarships Abroad scheme is the foremost of its kind in Spain in terms of the number and conditions of the grants awarded.

Current and former Fundación Caja Madrid scholarship holders number 520 at the time of writing.
