Two Million Trees
The idea

In 2002, Obra Social Caja Madrid set in train a multi-year project to repopulate areas of key environmental importance affected by forest fires, soil erosion and other environmental problems. From the outset, the focus has been on publicly owned land, to guarantee the proper maintenance in the first stages that is crucial for success. Another major success driver has been the work done with local communities to engage their support for the project through its successive stages.
Results
The original name of “A Million Trees” was changed to “Two Million Trees” once this first target was achieved. To date, a total of 1,021,877 trees have been planted under its aegis, with 1,950 hectares of hill-land reforested in eleven Spanish regions. Moreover, the planted specimens show an impressive survival rate of more than 95%.
The project won two awards in 2006 from the magazines Mi Cartera de Inversión and Actualidad Económica.
