Optimising the use of natural resources
A number of initiatives carried out in 2008 build on earlier plans to enhance efficiency in the use of natural resources.

Electricity consumption
- All of the light replacements done in Caja Madrid buildings have been with more efficient fluorescent tubes that consume an estimated 30.6% less electricity than the ones used in the past.
- The electrical installation in different parts of La Casa Encendida has been differentiated and upgraded to adapt their lighting to the specific needs of the activities carried on there. This achieved estimated savings of between 88% and 92% in 2008.
Renewable energies and cogeneration
- Caja Madrid acquired 2,279,548 kWh of electricity from renewable energy sources (green energy).
- La Casa Encendida has a photovoltaic system that generates part of the electricity consumed in the building. This installation prevented the atmospheric release of approximately four tonnes of CO2 in 2008.
- The co-generation system at the Las Rozas building uses residual calories from the power production process to fuel the heating system.
Water consumption
- The dismantling of three cooling towers in the offices has saved around 720 m3 a year in water consumption.
- The installation of electronic faucets in La Casa Encendida allowed further savings of approximately 51.6% in water consumption.
Sustainable materials
- In 2008 the branch advertising materials began using biodegradable bags. Made of water-soluble plastic, some 94,500 bags were distributed.
- Caja Madrid continued pressing its efforts to have suppliers use more environment-friendly materials in the activities they carry on in our premises.
- Some 98.3% of the paper consumed is recycled stock bearing the “Blue Angel” eco-label.
- White DIN A4 accounts for a mere 1.7% of total paper consumption and has been acquired from ecologically sound sources. Caja Madrid uses only ECF (elemental chlorine free) white paper with the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certificate ensuring that the timber content
comes from sustainably and responsibly managed woodland.
Fuel consumption
- The communication system installed in some Central Services has document sharing and conference call support features that cut down on travel requirements.
- For some worksites located in suburban or rural areas, collective transport arrangements are made available to employees so they do not need to use their own cars.
- The storage of office and advertising materials has been brought under a single logistics system, instead of using two independent channels as before. This helps minimise fuel consumption and reduces air emissions of transport-associated pollutants (CO2, NOx and
SO2).
