Emissions control

Caja Madrid contributes to the fight against climate change by buying green energy and through wildlife preservation initiatives, offsetting its CO₂ emissions with reforestation projects in different parts of Spain. In 2008:

• Acquisition of electricity from renewable energy sources (green energy) averted some 788.5 tonnes of CO₂ emissions.
• The planting of 74,804 trees, as part of the Obra Social-led “Two Million Trees” project, has permitted the fixing of 748 tonnes of CO₂.

Also, work continues on reducing and eliminating ozone-depleting emissions of HCFC refrigerants, through the timetabled withdrawal of climate control installations that use HCFCs. A total of 230 such units were replaced in 2008 at an estimated cost of 2,192,836 euros.
