Emissions control

Caja Madrid contributes to the fight against climate change by buying green energy and through wildlife preservation initiatives, offsetting its CO2 emissions with reforestation projects in different parts of Spain. In 2008:

  • Acquisition of electricity from renewable energy sources (green energy) averted some 788.5 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
  • The planting of 74,804 trees, as part of the Obra Social-led “Two Million Trees” project, has permitted the fixing of 748 tonnes of CO2.

Also, work continues on reducing and eliminating ozone-depleting emissions of HCFC refrigerants, through the timetabled withdrawal of climate control installations that use HCFCs. A total of 230 such units were replaced in 2008 at an estimated cost of 2,192,836 euros.
