Music programme

Fundación Caja Madrid’s music programme is the largest carried out by any private non-profit organisation in Spain.

The programme takes in three main categories that are mutually related: concerts, education and research, and musicology research, publications and recordings.

Concerts

The aim here is to break down the psychological resistance of certain sections of society to classical music, so it can be better understood and enjoyed by all. The 2008 programme took in the Chamber Music Season, the Music and Heritage Season, the Lied Cycle and the Spanish music cycle "Los Siglos de Oro", along with a new edition of the "Music of Our Time" contemporary music series in partnership with the Madrid Regional Government and the Ministry of Culture.

Education:

  • An ambitious pedagogical project for school children and young people in the Madrid Region (33 concerts attracting more than 22,000 youngsters).
  • Fundación Caja Madrid, together with Fundación Albéniz, the Ministry of Culture, the Madrid Regional Government and the Madrid City Council, have set up the Madrid International Chamber Music Institute, a major step forward in high-level musical training.
  • Sponsorship of the University of Alcalá specialisation and musical pedagogy courses for postgraduates and teachers.
  • Fundación Caja Madrid, in collaboration with Spain’s national youth orchestra, the JONDE, provides scholarships and travel grants for the orchestra's young instrumentalists wishing to pursue further studies in Spain or abroad.

Research:

  • Recovery of key works from Spain's musical heritage.
  • During 2008 work was completed to catalogue the musical manuscript collection of the heritage organisation Patrimonio Nacional, and two new editions were published in the musicology collection "Patrimonio Musical Español".

Musicology publications and recordings:

  • As part of a 3-year series, Fundación Caja Madrid started up a programme to produce recordings in three different musical areas, building on earlier projects and bringing them to fruition: recordings of Spanish historical music, in the “Los Siglos de Oro” collection; Zarzuela recordings (in 2008: Cádiz, de Chueca and Valverde); and a new collection of recordings of works by young Spanish composers, as part of a 3-year 15-CD project, in partnership with the Kairos record label, to distribute and strengthen the appreciation of the latest in contemporary Spanish music throughout the world.
